Broad Street Presbyterian Church

Sunday Worship 8:45 and 11:00 AM

Joel Mathias, Director of Music

As the senior member of the Broad Street staff, it has been my honor to work with outstanding leaders in theology, education, service, and administration, who have consistently stimulated and supported my own faith journey.  As only the third Director of Music since the choir was founded in 1934, I have tried to carry on and expand the tradition of excellence in music leadership in worship and in other musical experiences offered to the community at large.

My undergraduate degree is in Music Education from Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. While teaching, I also maintained my involvement in church music, either as organist, director, or choir member.  Following completion of my master’s degree in choral music at Indiana University, I realized that my “whole self” is at its best preparing music for worship.  I have always believed that all styles of music, and other art forms, should be offered, always presented with integrity, sincerity, and reflecting the highest standards of artistic achievement.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my position is caring for participants in the music program in a more personal way, with hospital visits, phone calls, and in those times in rehearsal when we share concerns for those who wish to be remembered.
