Jenny and Jed Koball are Presbyterian ministry partners serving in Peru. Broad Street has a 25-year relationship with the Peru Joining Hands Network (Red Uniendo Manos Peru). Red Uniendo Manos Peru tackles issues such as environmental contamination from the mining industry, the growing water crisis due to climate change, and trade policies that disadvantage many Peruvians. Jed Koball is a Global Ecumenical Liaison for the PC(USA), help share a new way of global ministry in our denomination. Jenny Koball is the Peru site coordinator for the Presbyterian Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program, which invites people ages 19 to 30 to serve in communities of need in the United States and globally. In addition to service, the YAV experience emphasizes living in intentional community, spiritual formation, and vocational discernment. Jenny recently helped pioneer a new vision for the YAV program, opening the opportunity to young adults in Peru and other Central and South American countries. We have had many groups of Broad Streeter visit Peru and are excited to take another group in 2026.
We also support
Marion Medical Mission Shallow Well program and promoting access to clean water for all.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is the emergency and refugee program of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. PDA focuses on the long term recovery of disaster impacted communities.
Trips
In recent years, we have been shifting how we understand trips and experiences. We have shifted from mission trips to immersion experiences. For us, that means shifting away from short-term volunteer activities focused on service delivery in a distant community, and moving to a deeper, more sustained engagement with a culture, aiming to learn and understand the local context and perspectives beyond just completing tasks. Essentially, moving from a “helping hand” approach to a more reciprocal learning experience where we actively participate in the community and build meaningful relationships with our partners.
Upcoming Trips for High School Youth and Adults:
Journey to Peru: Cultural Immersion Experience | Interest Forms Now Open | Tentative Dates: June 13–21, 2026
At Broad Street, we believe that following Jesus means crossing borders, with humility, curiosity, and a commitment to justice. That’s why we don’t call this a “mission trip.” Instead, we invite you into a cultural immersion experience: a journey of listening, learning, and mutual relationship.
In 2026, we’ll travel to Peru to continue our partnership between BSPC and Peru that is ongoing for over 25 years! Guided by local partners, including Jed and Jenny Koball, the Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program, and AETA (a progressive, ecumenical theological training center), we’ll explore how Peruvians are healing from colonial legacies and building a more just future.
The theme of the trip will be “Centering the Voices.” To explore this theme, we will have three experiences that invite us to reflect through the voices and experiences of:
- Indigenous Peoples in the Amazon – visiting communities in the San Martín region who are protecting their land and culture, honoring language and cultural resilience in the face of ongoing threats
- Afro-Peruvians – taking a day trip south of Lima to engage with leaders working toward racial justice and reparations, confronting racism and economic inequality
- Mother Earth, the Land – meeting with a community in Lima impacted by environmental harm, bearing witness to the struggle for environmental justice and the work of collective repair
We will name the church’s role in historical harm and commit ourselves to the slow, sacred work of repair, led by those most impacted. The trip will conclude with a visit to Cusco and Machu Picchu, where we’ll experience a fourth distinct culture and the breathtaking beauty of Peru’s past and present.
Spots are limited, and if needed, we’ll prioritize:
- Youth finishing grades 9–12
- First-time Peru travelers
- Youth and adults actively involved in the life of the church
Not a commitment – just a first step!
