I shared this on Sunday as an introduction to prayer and introduction to the benediction:

As I took in the news the last week or so, a refrain kept going through my head.

This is not the way things are supposed to be.

Hearing of the shooting in Monterey Park, I thought:

This is not the way things are supposed to be.

Hearing of the shooting in Half Moon Bay, I said to myself:

This is not the way things are supposed to be.

Reading about the video that shows Tyre Nichol’s murder – I have not yet been able to watch it – I said out loud:

This is not the way things are supposed to be.

This gap between what God intends for us and the way life actually plays out is not new. But this week that gap feels like an abyss. The only thing I know to do is name it. Tell the truth of things. And to reach out to God through any means available to us.

In the week to come I invite you to narrow the gap between what God hopes for us all and the way things are. Do one small thing to narrow that gap. Email an elected official, call someone you haven’t talked to in a while, rest deeply and well. May we narrow the gap. For God’s sake. For all of our sakes.

What are other ways in which things are not the way they are supposed to be?

What one small thing do you plan to do to narrow the gap?

I emailed the Democratic National Committee chair , Jaime Harrison, earlier this week to share some concerns. It’s such a little thing, but makes me feel connected to our federal government.

Inspired by this blog post and Betty Lou’s comment, I shared some research about public schools and vouchers with Ohio senators — in the hope that Senate Bill 11 might not pass into law.

I’m with Betty Lou in believing that we must enter the political realm to protest the seeming embrace of too many of our elected officials of policies that fly in the face of all that is foundational to the USA

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which I it stands
    One nation under God
With liberty and justice for all
