What song would you like sung at your funeral?
It’s something I think about periodically. Given what I do for a living, I may think about this stuff more than most people do! But, I have found it a helpful practice to think about my own funeral on a semi-regular basis. It reminds me of my mortality, my fragility, and my utter dependence on God. I remember and give thanks that in, life and in death, I belong to God.
So, what song would you like sung at your funeral? I have considered many options over the years but one I keep coming back to is “How Glory Goes.” Written by Adam Guettel, it is from the musical Floyd Collins. This song, addressed to God, is sung by the title character as he prepares for his imminent death. I invite you to listen to this version, sung by the exquisite Audra McDonald.

Give Me Jesus.
Dancing In The Moonlight…has always been one of my favorite songs …I would hope that people would be celebrating at my funeral and I like the thought of me becoming a star and dancing in the moonlight when I’m gone
It is hard…I am going for the full requiems – Rutter or Faure…Hard to choose.
Jenni and I used to ( pre-Covid days) sit in church and talk about this so each other would know.
I still like How Great Thou Art…..then sings my soul….I hope my soul is singing.
The Lord’s Prayer as sung by Donna at our wedding in 1962. I’ve kept a copy of it and have updated the format as the recording mechanics have changed over the years,
Swing low, sweet chariot
Coming for to carry me home…
Blessed Assurance sung by Tennessee Ernie Ford
Gloria a Te Cristo Gesus
Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber
Swing low sweet chariot is first on my list.

I hope folks can open this link to the song. Dolly Parton’s Blue Grass album The Grass Is Blue closes with the song, “ I Am Ready”
Oh Hosanna
Take my hand now
Lead me to the promised land now
I am ready, I am ready
Hallelujah, I am ready to go💜
If we played all the music I’d choose, the service would go on forever… anyone remember To Fill The World With Love from the old movie “Good-Bye Mr. Chips”?
